Real time location in the middle of nowhere

We are enjoying a getaway to the mountains, watching the vivid and colorful landscape and breathing pure air of the fresh fields with our friends. Suddenly, we realize that one of them is missing. It’s then when we wish we had shared our real time location with him.

There are many options in the market to use when searching for somebody on the mountain. We could send our real time location or call our friend. However, sending the location is not the best choice if we need to get found. Also, sending it individually to any of our hiking mates seems very boring.

If we call our friend he could explain us where to go, but unless we are experts in the area we will easily get lost. Wave is a complete app that positions groups of people on the same shared map, so they can all take advantage of the same real-time positioning.

How does real time location work?

At Wave we use a native backend that we have customized to reduce the load times of the position. Once the the smartphone reports the real time location, we are able to process that data and update it immediately on the smartphone of the people with whom a session is shared.

The algorithms of Wave are based on the use of GPS in conjunction with mobile networks and accelerometers. That way we achieve maximum precision. It can locate people while walking, hiking, driving, sailing, you name it.

What are the challenges of location in natural environments?

On the mountain it is usually more difficult to locate a real time position because there are no nearby references, such as streets, buildings or crossings. This is a challenge when it comes to painting the location on a map so that it is understandable to the user. Luckily, the cartography has advanced a lot.  Almost any mountain, natural route or park in the world is perfectly mapped.

The second great challenge we have faced is the connection to the internet in remote areas. This issue prevented, just a decade ago, applications like Wave. Nowadays, however, 3G is very widespread. In practically all the routes that travelers make there is internet coverage. It has become a necessity, both for inhabitants and for athletes.

The last big challenge that we have faced is to achieve high quality precision. This is for both for the most advanced smartphones, as well as for low-end devices that have very basic gps. We can affirm that there are great differences between them.

We have worked hard to adapt our technology, our charging times, battery optimization and accuracy to the characteristics of each phone. So, instead of focusing on being bright with the best conditions. For example, a smartphone of last generation, we have managed to offer the best possible technology for each user. No matter which device they keep on their pocket.

Wave interviews – Android Developer, Francisco Moya

He learned about the Android universe by building its own apps to solve his daily problems and now he is a total expert coding for Google Play. Take a look at the Android Developer interview we have made for Francisco, our very talented developer, in which he explains us how he made a way of living out of his passion for the technology.

1.- Why do you love Wave?

I love Wave because of two principal aspects. The first one is that it lets you keep connected with someone that you really want in real time in a private way. On the other hand, I highlight that Wave is so easy to use that anyone can use it. For example, I often use Wave with my wife when I travel and with my friends when we meet on the weekends.

2.- How did you get into mobile development?

When I was in my first year of university I have been attracted to the idea of creating apps that I could use with my smartphone and share them with my family and friends. I started researching information about mobile development, reading books, doing courses and publishing my first apps. Now I am very happy because Wave has given me the possibility of creating apps for millions of users.

3.- Why did you choose Android?

There were two main reasons, the first one is that when I started on mobile development I did not have a strong knowledge about programming and Java (Android development language at that moment). But this was much simpler than Objective-C (iOS development language at that moment).

On the other hand, iOS development requires to use a Apple device and in that moment I did not own one. Nowadays I develop for iOS too in my free time.

4.- What does interests you most in the process of tech development in Wave?

For me, the most interesting part is the final union of all tech processes in Wave. I.e. all engineers need to make different parts in each area and finally we join all the parts to make the product works. That moment is very interesting and special because it makes you feel good seeing that all works as expected.

In addition, there are very interesting situations in which we have to investigate a new area to find out new solutions to daily problems.

5.- You joined Wave on its earliest stage, how do things have evolved in your field?

It has been an amazing evolution for me and for Wave. When I joined Wave, I was alone on the Android team so I had to refactor all the project and search solutions to existing problems.

Since then, our team has grown a lot and we have been adapting to all new versions of Android. In this way, we have used several architectures, different paradigms, a lot of new libraries and we have learn.

6.- What future tech development most excites you?

I think that Artificial Intelligence in mobile development is one the most attractive features nowadays. New smartphones are more powerful than ever and they will let us apply different algorithms to improve the user experience.

In addition to Artificial Intelligence, in my opinion, blockchain will change a lot of the current technology processes in the following years.

7.- How do you keep yourself fresh? What does inspire you?

I feel very satisfied creating products for millions of users and it makes me happy that they really help them in their daily life. In this huge objective I need to continue learning everyday. Tech is a crazy sector, you have to keep yourself fresh continuously. To do that, in my free time I usually take courses, read books, research papers, listen to podcasts and attend to congresses. 

8.- What developments introduced at the latest Google I/O will impact in your work at Wave?

Google showed to the world the power of Artificial Intelligence in the last Google I/O, you only need to see Google Duplex, something incredible for this 2018. The possibility to apply Artificial Intelligence algorithms in mobile development is a great opportunity to improve the user experience and it will let us take Wave to the highest level.

9.- How do you see Wave in the next 5 years?

It is a very difficult question because technology changes every day. However, I think that Wave will be the location tech reference in 5 years because we are continuously learning. We keep on researching location techniques, improving the user experience and trying out new ways to improve Wave.

With the expansion of the Galileo satellite in the next few years and the appearance of the new GPS chips, the location will be more important if possible so we will be there working hard in that line.

Wave interviews – UX and web designer, Silvia Polo

Silvia is the most demanding app user in the world, as an expert in UX and as a web designer, she knows what works and what does not and expresses it with the creative experience of a doctor in communication. We interviewed our web designer and UX, Silvia Polo, to discover her tricks and tips at work. Get to know her!

 

1.- What do you love about Wave?

What I like the most about Wave is being able to work on an innovative project that shapes the needs of the market and having the chance to see the company grow little by little, expanding the team and improving the product. 

2.- You joined Wave in its earliest stage, how has your design evolved since then?

I come from an advertising agency. Although I had worked in a digital consultancy, I had not been involved in UX so much until I joined Wave, three years and a half ago. Since then, I have taken care of the design of UX and I have gotten fully into this world, while I have developed myself as a web designer. We all have been working step by step to understand the user and to develop the product in the best way possible.

3.- As a designer you impregnate the look and feel of Wave in all your designs in different formats and styles, so what are your tips to not lose this vision when innovating?

Well, above all, I know well who Wave’s target audience is and what are the design standards that we set ourselves at the beginning. Therefore, I try to maintain them while I set a young tone and I follow the current design trends. Besides, I always take in consideration our branding and make sure that we are not repeating ourselves so we don´t lose the users.

4.- What values of Wave do you use to create designs that connect with your audience?

Wave is an app that helps people to meet so they can be together, that’s why we focus on this concept a lot, and we bring up the concept of closeness, of being together, of going out to do things, to do sports or to enjoy a friendship. We especially try to use a carefree, young voice that can connects with our users.

5.- What trends do you find interesting in the field of lifestyle applications such as Wave?

Well, I see especially important the immediacy and the need to be connected at all times. What surprises me is that knowing this, there are still many apps that are not able to give the necessary tools and features to help users in their day to day. This is something that makes Wave stands out from others.

6.- Which part of the design process do you enjoy the most?

Well, for example, I really like the wireframe part, when step by step I start painting the application from some sketches. It is fascinating to see how something that was a doodling in a notebook ends up being a logical and attractive product. I love trying different styles, always within our guidelines, to see how we can innovate through design.

7.- How do you keep yourself fresh?

This is a profession in which you have to be up-to-date and I mean it literally. Every day new products, applications, websites, videos come out. We are hyperconnected and the startup world is very trendy and moves so fast. I read a lot, I’m into many newspapers and blogs, I follow designers to see what they are doing, I dive into a couple of social networks about creative work, especially to know what is being done to professional level in web design and UX.

I believe that is very important to keep myself informed of what is happening, not only at the UX level, but at everything related to creativity: advertising, art, podcasts, books, series… All of these sources are a great visual library to search for inspiration.

8.- You are a communication doctor and an expert in web and UX design, what inspires you the most to be part of a team like Wave?

My doctoral thesis was about advertising and creativity in social networks at the time that I was working on Wave. I was designing campaigns, so I was able to transfer part of my experience to my studies and enhance my experience.

What also inspires me on Wave is being surrounded by a large team of professionals from whom I can learn about areas that I do not control directly and I can take that knowledge both to work and to my personal life.

9.- Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Aww, that is a very difficult question. I see myself working on the most innovative project of geolocation of the moment, I see that Wave will have evolved a lot. Hopefully, I will continue to be part of a team that grows every day and that is focused on goals that matter.

 

Wave interviews – CTO, Pablo Clemente

Our super CTO has sat down with us to tell us his secrets, his tricks at work and what he likes the most about computers. He follows the Japanese proverb that says fall down seven times and get up eight, and explain his best practices in this interview. We introduce you to Pablo Clemente, CTO and partner of Wave Application.

1.- Hi Pablo, tell us a little bit about you! How did you end up leading one of the most inspiring tech companies in Spain?

Hi! I’m a telecommunications engineer from Madrid with three masters degrees. I have always believed that the only way to stay ahead of the curve in this demanding and ever changing technical world is to keep an always learning attitude. I have always loved startups, sometimes people forget that even the largest trees were actually born from seeds, and companies are no different.

Being there to witness and be part of that process is an amazing treat. I have worked for many companies but when I finally met Luis and Manuel and heard their initial idea for Wave, it was clear this was the best possible place to be.

2.- What do you love about Wave?

I have always loved the idea that a smartphone enables us to carry a full fledged computer in our pockets. The potential of this has always been staggering and has opened a new era of innovation that will change and make people’s life easier.

Wave is the culmination of that philosophy, we have created a product that helps people meet each other. In a world where social networks and messaging apps are leading to seeing less people in the real world, it is a joy to finally have a product that encourages you to meet the people you care about. Wave is the anti-social network.

3.- How did you managed to start Wave?

A project like Wave is both the challenge and the opportunity of a lifetime. I always felt all my knowledge, courses and experience were there to led me to Wave. I’ve always been a very curious person and that has enabled me to become a full-stack developer, and then a CTO, so that gave me the upper hand when tackling such an ambitious project, as I could undertake many tasks.

However, Wave at the same time built me. I have learnt and learn so much in the day to day of running it that every day has been a very enriching experience.

4.- How do you manage a team of different profiles?

This is a great question. Many developers are extremely specialized, so it is important to help them understand that Wave is a constant team effort. For instance, there is no point in creating beautiful designs and interfaces if the servers running everything are being oversaturated.

As a CTO I always try to convey a birds eye view of everything to everyone who works in Wave, so that as specialized as they may be, they get the idea of what they are doing and how that fits in all the cogs that make Wave run like clockwork.

5.- How can you actually implement technically your product considering that there are great global differences?

We have always had a laser like focus on creating the best possible location product, one that was the ultimate expression of simplicity, security and effectiveness. We love talking to our users and understanding how they use Wave, what they want to see and how they want it.

Being a worldwide app means that we have huge amounts of information to go through, but it is a very rewarding process when you feel you have nailed what people want.

6.- What is the thing that most inspires you about your team in Wave?

It is the privilege of a lifetime to work with such a talented team as a CTO. They are all amazing professionals and incredible people. It is awe striking to see how everyone seeks perfection at every turn, taking care of Wave as their own personal product, always questioning everything, striving to make something that carries our fingerprints and we can feel immensely proud about.

7.- What are the challenges for the next months / years?

We are in the midst of undergoing a huge revamp of the App. This years have been a huge learning process for us, we have learnt so much about what geolocation is to people, and how we can make meeting easier and do so in such a secure way even the military would not hesitate to use our apps.

However, sometimes it is time to rethink the core experience, using your knowledge to help you reach new heights. We are almost on the verge of releasing a new product that we think will raise the bar of what we expect of a geolocation app.

We are also very focused on a business to business approach, as we are currently working with schools, insurance companies, and deliveries to provide them with the best geolocation technology to empower them to embrace a whole new world of benefits.

8.- Does Wave plan to evolve into a personalized experienced for the users, based on their habits?

Of course, as you mentioned in a question earlier, we are a worldwide app, having to accommodate a diverse spectrum of countries and cultures. Furthermore, when you think of it, every user is different, so why should the app be the same for all? We are working on a way of making sure that Wave is not only a cool app, but it is YOUR cool app.

9.- As Facebook privacy crisis arises, people are more concerned than ever about sharing their data online, so how does Wave manage the privacy of their users?

We believe managing sensitive data is a responsibility, and one that should not be taken lightly. Privacy is at the core of Wave’s mechanical heart. Sharing your location is a daunting proposal and the only way we can expect people to trust us and use our App to do so, is by committing to highest possible standards of protecting that data.

We use SSL, end to end encryption, and a complex variable token mechanism to ensure that only the people you are sharing your location with are able to see it. We will never compromise on security, we owe that to our users for their trust and support.

10.- How do you see the mobile landscape in the near future in terms on location based services?

Right now location based services are booming, from localised tweets and posts, to all types of map interactions. It is clear that user’s demand a leader in geolocation technology that they can trust, and this has led it to become the next big gold rush. Many companies like Facebook, WhatsApp and Telegram are gearing towards location sharing.

This is great news for us, since they have validated a model we have been working on since 2014. Now we are stronger and more experienced than ever, and the future looks bright, both for users and for us.

11.- Do you have a sentence that describes yourself?

Yes,  there is a Japenese proverb that says fall down seven times and get up eight. I think  you are constantly failing and you have to do lots of trials and it’s important to make sure that you never stop and you always keep on pursuing your goals

12.- A final thought about building companies & teams?

When building any type of team or company, for me an absolute must is keeping a humble attitude, and letting both the team and the company teach you too. Entrepreneurship is about diving into uncharted waters, and no one can be best at everything.

The amazing thing about a startup is that the more time you put into it, the more it will reward you with experience. Some experiences will help you push forward, others on the other hand will teach where not to go, or what not to do. But every small fragment will define you, make you into a better leader.

Always keep an open mind and remember that building a team and a company is not a one way street, you have to build yourself at the same time working hand in hand with everything and everyone.

Wave Application nails it again on its latest crowdfunding campaign

Wave has recently closed its second crowdfunding campaign at Crowdcube super successfully. It has reached its £ 500.000 campaign objective during the very first day. The end result for the 30 day crowdfunding campaign is amazing £ 845,980, backed up by 597 investors.

A big part of the success is probably due to the KPIs that Wave presented on its video. Numbers are the following: 80% retention rate and 800% growth in monetization. Those have surely caught the investors’ eyes. Another possible key to success is that Wave had signed previously a A series with prestigious investors. Also, the investors on Crowdcube had the opportunity to sign under the same conditions on the crowdfunding campaign .

Along with its great usage, at Wave we introduced for the first time revenue data from the placement of native and non intrusive ads. It is a new way of monetizing that has driven the app into the online business market.

Prior to this campaign we already did a crowdfunding campaign at CrowdCube in 2016. That time we also hit our goal gaining more than 700 thousand pounds. They were decisive to develop the product we have today.

 This is not the only way of investment we have planned for this year. As we have just signed two Serie A with prestigious investors. Wave is ready to take the app to the next level, arriving to all smartphones in the world.

 As the features are launched very rapidly the design and UX must be continuously adapted. Our design department, led by the Creative Director of Pinterest, makes sure that the latest trends are also followed in the look & feel of the app.

With the investment raised, Wave will continue improving the product and it aims to lead the real time location market. Wave is set to be the best app to navigate and meet friends. It works anytime there is a plan and to connect with them anywhere in the world.

Wave is a tool to connect people by sharing their location in real time with relatives of friends when needed. They can set a meeting point, chat and be able to arrive to the destiny fast and accurately, anywhere in the world.

However, we have realised that we can extend our technology in positioning and mapping to other companies that need this service. That is why we are implementing secondary B2B verticals. Our crowdfunding campaign exceeds the target of half a million pounds in the first hours

Objective fulfilled! The success could not have been greater. Just a few hours after we started our second crowdfunding campaign, the goal we had of getting 500,000 pounds was exceeded by an investment of more than 200 investors. The end result for the 30 day campaign is amazing £ 845,980. This is backed up by 597 investors.

A big part of the success is probably due to the KPIs that Wave presented on its pitch video. 80% retention rate and 800% growth in monetization. And this is only the beginning. 

This is the second time that we have made a crowdfunding campaign in Crowdcube. This is a reputed crowdfunding platform in the United Kingdom, in which we obtained in 2016 more than 700 thousand pounds. They were decisive in developing the product we have today.

On this occasion we are more experienced entrepreneurs and we are older. We have gone to Crowdcube with results of what we envisioned two years ago. All our KPIs are fulfilled with a great userbase, a high retention rate and with an app that already monetizes. As many investors will know, there is no better cover letter before a crowdfunding campaign.

These core features have allowed us to grow our user base from 3.5 million in 2016 to more than 11 million today and to achieve a retention rate of 80 percent.

And will you say if the application is free, how do you earn money out of it? Two years ago, we did not worry about that. We wanted to follow an American model and validate our idea, to show that people loved it and that it was worth it. Today our user base has allowed us to have a very good technology that we can adapt to other companies. ALSO, it is an excellent platform to display non intrusive ads.

La Navidad está a la vuelta de la esquina y solo quedan unos días para cumplir con todos los compromisos sociales propios de la época: cenas de empresa, comidas de Navidad con distintos grupos de amigos, noches de copas, visitas a la familia y por supuesto, búsqueda de los últimos regalos.

En este escenario encontrarse con amigos o familiares entre la multitud es difícil, por ello la geolocalización en tiempo real de Wave es una solución para facilitar las quedadas. Con Wave dos personas o un grupo comparten su ubicación en tiempo real en un mapa privado, ven por dónde llegan, fijan un punto de encuentro y chatean. Está disponible gratis para iOS y Android.

¿Cómo funciona? Wave utiliza las notificaciones para enviar permisos que todos los miembros deben aceptar antes de compartir la ubicación. Una vez aceptada se despliega un mapa ubicando a todos los contactos deseados durante un tiempo limitado, en el que van viendo por dónde van caminando o conduciendo, tal y como hacen en la vida real.

Cómo empezó todo

“Creamos Wave a partir de una situación en la que esperábamos a un colega de trabajo para una reunión y como estaba conduciendo en la moto no sabíamos cuánto iba a tardar ni si estaba bien. Fue un momento muy frustrante en el que entendimos que no existía una solución sencilla, privada y precisa para quedar con amigos, compañeros o familiares y decidimos crear Wave”, afirma De La Esperanza.)

En tan solo dos años, esta startup española ha conquistado a más de 11 millones de usuarios y tiene tráfico diario en más de 190 países. La aplicación se ha usado en aeropuertos, festivales, estaciones de esquí, viajes por todo el mundo y sobre todo en el día a día de miles de personas.

Wave brings your family together in Christmas

Christmas is just around the corner and there are only a few days left to meet the commitments of the season: company dinners, Christmas lunches with different groups of friends, nights out with friends, family visits and of course, searching for the last gifts.

Meeting with friends or relatives among the crowd is many times difficult, therefore the technology of Wave is a solution to facilitate the meetings by enabling two or more people to share their live location on a private map. They can also set a meeting point and chat. Wave is available for free for iOS and Android.

How does it work? Wave uses notifications to ask users for permission, once they accept it a map is displayed spotting each member moving in real time, as they do in real life.
