2018 New Year resolutions and how tech, apps and gadgets will help you achieve each of them

It is the time to write the New Year’s resolutions, such as maintaining contact with old friends, having a healthier, more balanced life, studying, saving and so on. To help you finally achieve your goals this year, we have listed the 5 most popular ones in the world, collected from the Internet, google searches and surveys and we show you how to comply with the help of technology. Applications, robots and gadgets are at your service to help you achieve your goals for 2018.

1. Live life to the fullest

Living life to the fullest has been crowned as the most popular New Year resolution to begin 2018, according to a GOB survey. Experts relate this goal to an economic improvement, the crisis not being our main concern, to a greater awareness of the limited time we live and to the desire to organize all aspects of our life in the best possible way to enjoy every moment.

It is recommendable to start by introducing new plans each day, such as going to the theater to see an improvisation, taking dance classes or marking pictures of animals in nature. For those who need inspiration, the All Events in City app (free for iOS and Android) offers an endless number of activities to enroll in, sorted by proximity and thematic. In the same way, traveling is for many a way of living to the fullest, since it combines new food, new cultures and great experiences to remember. Technology in this case could serve with a list of applications for trips that you should not miss and that you can find here listed.

2. Spend more time with our friends and family

Christmas app

We are increasingly aware that social relationships make us happier, more prosperous and more ambitious, so it is not surprising that it is a New Year’s purpose to maintain them and regain contact with special people we do not see often. We all know that sometimes it is difficult to meet, we have endless groups to chat, we decide what to do and finally we have a hard time finding each other in the crowded centre of the city, calling over and waiting for them.

Wave Let’s Meet App (free for iOS and Android) is an application that facilitates the meetings, enabling people to share their location in real time and simultaneously with whoever they want when they are going to meet. Thus, people can set a meeting point on the map, see how to get there and where are the others with incredible accuracy. Once there are no long waits on the street suddenly meeting with friends seems much simpler.

While it is easy to meet for a coffee there are multiple ways to have a great plan with friends, such as spending a day outdoor hiking, biking or simply enjoying the nature. One cool gadget worth to carry on is the DJI Mavic Drone. This drone flies over the group of friends and records astonishing videos at  4K 1080p quality.

3. Get fit and do sports

Fitness woman for new year resolution

Doing sports, living a healthy life, eating fruits and vegetables are part of our end-of-year purposes. We barely have time to go to the gym every day, prepare a healthy smoothie for breakfast and make an elaborate dinner. Therefore we like applications such as 30 Days Fitness Challenge (free for iOS and Android), which establishes a light monthly plan with exercises to do at home and without equipment of 30 minutes or less per day to strengthen our health and get those desired six packs.

For the adventure getaways we recommend to get a pair of wireless headphones, resistant to sweat and inclement weather and with enough battery for the entire day. One of the most popular brands of 2017 is Jaybird X3 wireless headphones, designed to cushion outside noise and calibrate the sound adapted to the movement by bike or running. They have bluetooth, equalized and a comfortable cable that connects both headphones behind the head.

4. Eat healthy

For all of us who are not experts in nutrition, counting calories it is already a tough New Year resolution. That’s why we love using applications such as Mealime (free for iOS, Android) that do it for us, at the same time they offer us tasty weekly menus that include the caloric intake and the necessary nutrients for each lifestyle.

If, in addition, a gadget can facilitate the task of cooking healthy soups and juices for us, great. Scott Soupmaker is a high-tech mixer that produces soups, creams, purées and pastes without the need for any knowledge on our part. The robot also comes with a function for the busiest: the one to clean itself. Lastly, for those who have any serious addiction such as smoking, it is a good time to curb the intake or cut it cold turkey with the help of Smoke Free app (free for Android).

5. Avoid procrastination and be organized

Procrastination is one of the great scourges of modern society. It is the ability to delay the activities that we should do and leave them for another time. Being more productive and avoid procrastination has become one of our main concerns, as well figuring out how to be more organized. There are several methods in which technology can help, such as the Todoist app (free for iOS and Android), which is a complete organizer for task and lists by priorities, colors, people in charge and deadlines.

Not only apps do a great job to help us stay focused, there are great gadgets to help such as  Atentif Hour Glass. This app uses the pomodoro technique that suggests to work for 25 minute intervals (called pomodoros) to rest 5 minutes. The clock alerts the owner of every stage while the sand falls. Simple and effective.

Have you felt identified with this list? Tell us in the comments what your New Year’s purpose is and we will help you find the app or gadget that best helps you. Happy New Year!

Volvo Ocean Race 2017-18: everything your need to know, stages, climate and stunning videos

“Hark, now hear the sailors cry, smell the sea, and feel the sky let your soul & spirit fly, into the mystic…” said the singer Van Morrison and could not describe better what will be the most important regatta in the world, the Volvo Ocean Race. More than 45,000 nautical miles throughout the world will be the scenario for a speeding race with the best navigators in the world.

The world competition will be played between 7 participating teams of various nationalities and men and women who will conquer the oceans. Several of them have Olympic medals and a long career in the seas, although for others it will be the first time they will experience a 7 month sailing around the world facing calm seas, icebergs, tropical storms and a hostile climate, in which the navigation strategy will mark the decisive victory of each stage.

The Volvo Ocean Race is a world regatta that started in 1973 from Portsmouth, in the United Kingdom and had only 4 stages. By today it is been extended to 11 stages and departs from Alicante, in Spain.

Route of Volvo Ocean Race 2017-2018

In each edition, the race slightly changes its route to cover new cities of each of the continents.

The first stage

It will begin on October 22 from Alicante, a coastal city in Spain located in the Mediterranean Sea towards Lisbon, in the Atlantic Ocean. It will cover 700 miles.

The previous calm of the warm European sea will be interrupted by a foreseeable odyssey around Cabo de Gata, a complicated orography, as it is navigated very close to an outgoing coast with capes, bays, strong winds and extreme climatic conditions. Sailors would feel periods of absolute calm – impossible for navigation – near Lisbon, as forecasted the prologue of the race.

The in-port race will be held on November 3 in Lisbon and it would be a unique opportunity for tourists and fans who want to see the speed and intensity of the race between the teams near the coast, encourage them and feel the power of navigation in front of his eyes.

The second stage

It will start on November 5 in Lisbon and border the entire western coast of Africa to reach Cape Town in South Africa. In this stage of 7000 nautical miles there will be several meteorological changes and different challenges, starting with an autumnal climate in Lisbon and following an extreme climate of high temperatures and instability in the Azores archipelago, where the winds will determine if they stimulate a fast navigation or make it slow down. The in-port race will take place in Cape Town on December 8.

The third stage

It will depart from Cape Town on December 10 towards Australia, throughout the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian Ocean. It is a very difficult stage of wear and tear, in which several teams in the past have not been able to finish it, due to the area of continuous storms.

The arrival in Melbourne will depend very much on the weather. The strategy of how participants will use the climate conditions to decide their route will be key to determining if they arrive on time to the Australian coast. In this case, an in-port regatta will not be held to give sailors time to rest.

The fourth stage

It will start on January 2, 2018 and will be a surprise, as there are plenty of alternatives to go to Hong Kong across different seas, such as the Coral Sea and the South China Sea. Sailors will cross 6000 miles with several climatic zones, dominated by tropical monsoons, periods of calm and influenced by the great proximity to the coast along the islands. The in-port race will take place on January 27 or 28 in Hong Kong.

The fifth stage

It features the Guangzhou in-port race on February 3 and water activities there, and will be non-scoring for the sailors, who will have to return to Hong Kong for their sixth stage.

The sixth stage

It will start on February 7 and will return to Australia, this time to the southernmost part docking in Auckland, after a journey of 6100 miles. It is an extreme stage, in which the resistance of the ships will be tested through storms and adverse weather conditions around the Solomon Islands. The in-port race will take place on 10 March in Auckland.

The seventh stage

It will cover the 7600 mile distance between Auckland and Itajaí in Brazil. This stage is the most coveted by sailors, as they will have a bonus the first to cross the Cape Horn. Unlike other stages, in this the navigators will go in search of the cold, leaving an Australia in autumn to cross the South Ocean with icebergs and icy temperatures. On April 20, the bravest sailors will battle the in-port battle in Itajaí.

The eighth stage

It will run between Brazil and the United States, departing on April 22 from Itajaí and arriving in New Port after 5600 miles of sailing. In it, the most important feats will be lived again with the fast winds Alisios, doldrums near the equator, which are always unpredictable, and the anticyclone of Saint Helena, in which they could delay their departure. The in-port battle will take place on May 19 in New Port.

The ninth stage

It will return to Europe crossing the European continent in an incipient summer, after 5600 miles of distance. They will arrive in Cardiff, UK, where the in-port race will take place on 8 June. This is a classic route in the world of Western navigation, illustrated with large ice floes and fog, as happened with the famous Titanic, and the fearsome of the hot spring coming from the Gulf of Mexico.

The tenth stage

It will border the British Isles and Ireland for 1600 miles in direction to Gothenburg, Sweden. Two predictable scenarios can occur, one with storms of the Azores anticyclone, and another more calm, with a warm climate of the summer. The in-port battle will take place in Gothenburg on 17 June.

The eleventh and final stage of the Volvo Ocean Race

It will culminate in the Dutch city of The Hague, after 700 miles in which sailors will make the final sprint to become champions of the largest sailing competition in the world. The in-port battle will be in The Hague on June 30, accompanied by the celebrations of the victory.

The in-port races are a great way to live on the beachfront the action and strategy of the sailors, the excitement of the sport and to know a new city. Thousands of people will flock to the beaches these days, so we recommend the free Wave Application app, where you can meet your group of friends or family even in the crowd, sharing your live location privately on a map and for a limited time. It’s available for iOS and Android.

“It seems impossible until it is achieved”, says the world champion of windsurfing: Interview with Blanca Manchón

The Spanish athlete Blanca Manchón has just been proclaimed for the sixth time windsurfing world champion. Former Olympian athlete, queen of windsurf and recently mother, Blanca reveals the secrets of a training to the height of a championship.

“Eat healthy and rest” are the premises by which any training should starts, according to Blanca. “On the pillars of a healthy life, you can grow as an athlete as your strength improves to train more and better. And therefore you do better in competition. The physical strength in windsurfing will not make you win a competition but it can make you lose. From there is also very important to get familiar with the equipment and the technique you will use in every competition”, says the athlete.

Blanca began training as a minor in the port of Cadiz, Spain, with the help of her parents, who are also windsurfing professionals. The family used various technologies to fine tune their material with indicators of winds, tides and sediments. Nowadays, technology has helped a lot to speed up this process and Blanca recognises that she uses several apps integrated in her smartphone to predict the weather conditions and to prepare the training accordingly.

“We use both mobile apps and small weather stations integrated in the boards to make sure that we know the precise weather conditions. Trying to anticipate the behaviour of the wind can be decisive in the course of a race”; says Blanca.

Training not only starts with the sail set, though, the exercises that Blanca does every day include running, swimming, cycling and stretching on balls in balance to improve her stability. Like any other competitor, Blanca has suffered several injuries. The most severe ones are in the shoulder, so she has to deal with specific exercises to prevent injuries. “In dry training I always use functional assessment systems to measure my workout and to avoid muscular asymmetries”; reveals Blanca.

Blanca’s career started when she was a child. She won her first world title for children in 2000 competing in Cádiz. After that, she won two other world titles and several championships that headed her to the Olympic games of Athens, where she participated being only 17. Between that first adventure of the elite and the next one that she hopes to culminate in the Olympic games of Tokio, there is a whole life of races. Full of curiosity, we asked her about how she has managed success at different ages.

“I spent a few years maybe too obsessed with the Olympic event and without taking into account that it is only once every 4 years”

“I’ve gone through several emotional stages regarding the competition. I lived the Olympic Games without being aware that I represented a country and that there were many people pending on my performance. I was only 17 years old and I did not value it as I do now. After that I spent a few years maybe too obsessed with the Olympic event and without taking into account that it is only once every 4 years, and that in between there are many other competitions to enjoy, says Blanca.

“Now I am at the right point of maturity to value the Olympic Games as they deserve, but knowing how to enjoy the 4 years that I have to take them. Enjoying therefore of the way and not only of the objective to obtain it”; says the athlete. “To me world championships are the ones that I enjoy the most because it is where there is more competition”, says Blanca.

Her last world championship, the sixth of her titles, was conquered last July in Salou, competing with a borrowed sail and paying by herself the particular costs for training, accommodation and travel. It seems incredible that being a world champion goes through economic hardships, however part of her job is to get good relationships with sponsors who support her in every race.

In her case, getting pregnant was crucial for her sponsors to lose faith in her work and finish all the economic support she was receiving for years. Fortunately, she showed to the world again that she is a champion and she was capable to win just 7 months after giving birth.

“It seems impossible, until it is achieved”; she says. “This is the phrase I always keep in mind when things get complicated and seem so difficult to get. When I was without sponsors I had a very sad feeling of abandonment, but my team supported me and encouraged me to get a good sporting result again. They have always believed that as soon as I showed that I was up again, the supports would reappear. And so it seems to happen”, she says.

Having seen amazing landscapes while competing, we asked Blanca which one she enjoyed the most, perhaps we can get ideas for our next holidays!  “I would very much like to spend a vacation in New Zealand because the times I have gone have been to compete and I have not been able to visit anything. Also, I would definitely repeat vacation in Barbados. I went with my husband to surf and rest for 10 days and we fell in love with the island”, says Blanca.

Workput fitness app

Did you hear about this one? Top 5 Fitness apps

Some of us we have not signed up for the gym, or even worse: we did sign up but we hardly know the way there 😀 Therefore, we can suggest other ways to exercise to get in shape this year. Among countless apps on the market we chose a list of the most interesting and coolest, so that the procrastinators no longer have an excuse. Here are the most innovative apps for fitness with virtual reality, artificial intelligence and social networks:

Zombies, Run!

For those who hate sports because it makes them feel bored, the solution comes hand in hand with Virtual Reality. There are several apps that are taking advantage of the ‘gamification’ to introduces it into the daily routine of people and give vent to the tremendous innovative effort suggested by this format. Would you be able to exercise if a zombie panda kept chasing you?

Zombies, Run! uses scenarios created specifically for virtual reality goggles with the intention of getting yourself involved in an interesting history through your headphones. Once you start running and listening to the story, you can see yourself climbing fences and running to to survive. It may sound slightly spooky, but this app has already three million downloads worldwide. With each update, the number of scenarios increase so you never get bored.

Virzoom

Following with the Virtual Reality to exercise, another app that we found interesting is Virzoom. The app takes advantage of a real machines such as a bike, to immerse yourself in a story and make you protagonist of it realistically. It presents a wide range of situations such as a city defended from the dinosaurs. For the next version they will release a parkour scenario to let you jump on the rooftops of your city. Impressive.

Vi

If you are one of those who enjoy exercising but don’t know how to do it correctly, it would be best to hire a personal trainer at least in the beginning. Through Artificial Intelligence, the creators of VI have developed an app that controls the data of your exercises to guide you step by step, let you rest when you need to and create a personalized exercise plan for you. Vi is a personal trainer who lives right there in your harman Kardon headphones, that come in a bundle with the app.

Moov

Another personal trainer who uses artificial intelligence is Moov, but with the main difference that it uses a wearable device to control more exercise data, such as beats, steps you are giving or rhythm. Once you collect data from your smartwatch of your daily performance, you can adjust the intensity levels of the application to suit your needs. We really liked how complete the app is:  running, swimming, cycling, boxing, and timed workouts. Each has the option of creating an exercise table and saving your evolution.

Daily Mile

Fitness app daily mile
Daily Mile

Daily Mile is an application and social network with exercise tables for all levels that you can easily do at home. It has tips, daily exercise plans and tips that you can use and share with your friends. The best part, however, is the social network that allows you to share your workout routine with your friends and followers. You can bring out your competitive side and let others know the effort you are making, and even share it directly on Twitter post…to show off or to get motivated 😉

Last but not least, if you are not planning to do sports “solo” – open a wave and meet up with your friends to go running, mountain biking, surfing… – or to have that one beer after getting all fit.

Video: 4 funny ways to do sports with friends and lose weight

New Year and the New Year’s resolutions. Some people want to learn a new language, some travel more while others decide to spend more time with their loved ones. The one very classic New Year’s resolution in the occidental world is losing weight. Take a look at the funniest ways to do it around the world 😉

1. Grass Ski

While one part of the world is covered with snow, the other can always enjoy skiing in the sand dunes or something different: grass ski!  Paradoxically, the idea comes from a German who lives near the Austrian Alps and could not bear the idea of spending six months a year without skiing. The skis are shorter than the ones  for snow and more flexible to allow jumps and twists. It is a great experience to do sports with friends and lose some weight along the way. Grass ski has become so popular that it is now considered an official sport and skis are marketed worldwide.

2. Megangsingan Spinning

If you are lucky enough to be in Bali, throw a wooden disk in the city of Pujungan! This is a similar sport to Olympics discus throw, however, it is done with a wooden ball. The wood disk is a sport that requires good sight, strength in the arms and a vast territory to throw it far away without putting anyone in danger. It’s a cool sport that you can do it in group. You can bet who has the longest jump to make it more fun.

3. Jump like a Kangaroo

No need to travel to Australia since this one you can do almost anywhere: in the nearest park, in the mountains or in the city center. Jumping like a kangaroo is perhaps the most hilarious way to do cardiovascular exercises. This idea was born in Eastern Europe a decade ago with the invention of boots with shock absorbers, a design that allows you to jump stable and very high, anywhere.  The boot creators organize events in major cities to “dance-jump” listening to the music.

4. Reinvent traditional games

If you love Billiards or Snooker but want to try new things, here you have SnookBall, a fun sport game that involves hitting balls with your feet instead of with the cue. It is played on a grass field with three holes on each of the two longer sides of the rectangle. The goal is to get your team’s balls into the holes by kicking only the white ball and waiting for the rebound. This sport was invented by French friends Aurélien and Samuel, who wanted to give a little excitement to their group sports afternoons, get in shape and change the style of their garden. We love it and we think it is a way easier than traditional Snooker and a great sport to enjoy with friends. What do you think? What don´t you give it a try and send us a picture?
